Apple Inc has upto 14 cameras reportedly in its mixed-reality headset unlike Meta’s Quest 2 or HTC’s Vive Focus 3 which had 4 cameras for video passthrough and inside-out tracking. According to the report, the extra cameras will be used to track the user's face to ensure the virtual avatars will accurately represent faces and mouth movements in virtual reality. Apple couldn't place cameras where eyes should be because of eye screen representation on the outside, which compelled engineers to place cameras in other places. Apple' internal team reportedly faced a similar conflict previously in developing chips and software for a setup using "base station" connected to it headset. The company's board of directors were recently shown a demo of the headset, Bloomberg reported, with speculation of a launch coming in the near future.
