Twitter challenges Indian govt orders to take down tweets

Twitter has challenged orders from the Indian government to take down tweets after it received a warning letter earlier in June.    The letter had warned Twitter’s team to keep in mind the serious consequences they might have to face if they don’t comply with the government's order. According to the BBC, the Indian authorities had given a certain number of blocking orders that fall under India's information technology law. These laws allow the government to restrict content that can pose harm to the security of the state and overall public order. The letter sent to Twitter was a final warning to comply with these orders, stating that a 'failure to do so will lead to criminal proceedings'. Twitter has now approached the court as it believes that the orders are "procedurally and substantially deficient" of the requirements of the law and many of them "demonstrate excessive use of power and are disproportionate". The Indian government has often approached Twitter to block content or remove tweets and accounts on various occasions. Be it the protests by the farmers or the critique over the government's handling of the pandemic, the government has cited maintaining public order as a reason for its actions.
