Twitter is developing a new feature that will allow users to control who can mention them on the platform with a toggle. Users can either completely remove the feature for mentions or limit the mentions to only those accounts they follow. App researcher, Jane Manchun Wong, posted a picture of the feature Twitter was experimenting with, to give users more control over their tweets. Disabling the toggle for ‘Allow Others to Mention you’, would restrict any mentions, much like their recently launched feature which lets users leave chats. Restricting mentions would mean others users can still mention your account but it won't link up to user account or notify them. Recently, Twitter has released a range of audience control tools for users like restricted replies, Twitter Circles for private group chats, Safety Mode for auto-blocking spam and abusive replies, and Communities for enclosed discussions. Twitter is trying to minimize the negative impact of social media, especially being called out and shunned by internet users for sharing an opinion. Users should be allowed to dictate their own user experience on social sites with the tools provided.
