X rolls out Chat platform with expanded messaging tools

X has begun rolling out its long-anticipated Chat platform, introducing the most significant update to its messaging system since direct messages were first added. The upgrade replaces the platform’s basic inbox with a suite of tools more in line with contemporary messaging apps. The new features include voice and video calling, file sharing, message editing and deletion, and privacy options such as end-to-end encryption and screenshot alerts. The service is currently available on iOS and the web, with the company noting that the Android version is coming soon. X also confirmed that it is developing a voice memo feature for sending short audio messages. The company had previewed parts of this overhaul earlier in the year. It launched an initial version of encrypted messaging before pausing the rollout in May to address unspecified issues. According to an updated help centre article, X now supports encrypted group messaging and encrypted media, though some metadata, including recipient information, remains unprotected. The help centre also notes that the system does not guard against man-in-the-middle attacks, meaning a malicious insider or X under legal obligation could potentially compromise an encrypted conversation without users being notified. The company says it is working on tools that will allow users to verify the authenticity of encrypted chats. The latest update moves X closer to offering a full-fledged chat service, though several security-related features are still under development.
